Sloppy work from colleagues in the trades industry can be very frustrating for giving everyone a bad name. Clive Holland, host of The Clive Holland Show, recently discussed this problem and wanted to know - when tradespeople get called in to fix their work, is it annoying or do they see it as a money maker? Clive spoke to Alex Burman and Dan Brown on their thoughts on fixing shoddy work and just how they see it in industry currently. Burman said: “Many at times, I have arrived at a job only to spot sloppy workmanship done by other trades people. Recently it was one of my very own sub-contractor which I was very shocked. So, it does happen, a bit of human error involved. I do know from past experiences that a lot of the mistakes on the domestic side of things are being picked up by clients who are having to pay lots of money outside what they had budgeted for. “As a business owner, I find it hard to trust people. The team am with right now is phenomenal but I struggle to trust people on the job I have never worked with before. I want things to be done exactly as I would do them because at the end of the day, it’s my reputation that’s at stake and reputation is key. A caller to the show Kev Laing, said: “You should see the pieces we are picking up on a new extension. I wish I’d never agreed to the remedial work. Nightmare!” Another caller Steve Power said: “I think that if I have to pick up from a poor job, then it really is money in the bank. I don't mind as long as it’s doable and I have the time. That said, where do I start? People without proper training, no quality site management and shareholders greed are all to blame for the sloppy work we are seeing.” Brown said: “It’s not funny Clive tidying up other people’s work. I would say I see it regularly and that’s because the longer you do it the more you figure out the people you want to work with on jobs. You do need some good trades and I must say they are some fantastic trades out there that will do a proper job and won’t leave you with something else. “On the flip side, there is out there what are called the bear minimums. Whether they are clever than the rest of us or they get in and get more money and go or they are just lazy and just do the bear minimum that’s fine but if you work in a close knit trade you can’t behave like that otherwise you won’t have work coming your way.”
