With the quality of new build houses continuing to be below par – to the point one Housebuilder had to demolish all 36 of their new build properties, Clive Holland, host of The Clive Holland Show, wanted to know what needs to be done to stop shoddy work on new build homes? Clive recently attempted to get to the bottom of it with Leon Livermore, CEO of New Homes Quality Board, as well as talking to a friend who had been on both sides of the fence, Dave Bryne. Bryne said: “The problem lies with one, the house builder in that they always bring in the cheapest quality and stuff like that and second, you have people working on new build who can’t do certain works to the highest standard so you will bring people to do it on a cheap. The other thing about site jobs is that if you are very good at your job, you end up picking up the pieces for other people’s mistakes and before you know it, you can’t be bothered anymore because one turns to two days and you have got Wednesday, Thursday and Friday to go and rectify the shoddy work and a bad week of lost money. “In the past, the mantra was build it live you live in it. The mantra now is you can’t see it from my house and it’s a complete reverse. The amount of times that you hear people talking like that is quite shocking really. Luke the Chippy, a listener to the show shared: “Developers need to slow down and stop coming up with unachievable programs. Time and time again you try to help them out on site and they think you're trying to pull the wool over their eyes. Constant flat builds isn't the way. Quantity over quality unfortunately.” Another caller to the show Dicky added: “I'm not sure the house builders are the problem it's the greedy contractors wining these sites taking a big percentage on the prices and caping peoples earnings. And unfortunately it seems they all seem to be in cahoots with each other monopolising the jobs.” Livermore noted: “A vast number of new builds are quality homes and acceptable for habitation. The issue is that when something goes wrong, the impact is quite significant and I think it’s because it is very emotional and expensive purchase for someone. By and large, the developers in the UK do a reasonably good job bearing in mind that these are built outside and in all kinds of conditions. I have been around the country and visited nine new developments and there is none that I wouldn’t have moved into myself.”
