How to set up your bricklaying business for success

Posted: Wednesday, November 8th, 2023

Izzy the Bricky, host of The Bricklaying Show, is upbeat and enthusiastic about entrepreneurship and was recently joined by Ash Francis from The Bricklayers Social Club and fellow bricklayer, James Rodon, to discuss how they went about setting up their businesses.

Izzy was also joined by Trades Business Coach, Wayne Bettes to explain how to set up your business for success and Ben Livings from HMRC gives some advice on how to do your tax properly.

Francis said: “When I worked with different sub-contractors, I worked on a self-employed basis. What that essentially meant was that I could brand my own company  working as a sub-contractor. Quite comfortably, I didn’t have to do much in the way of admin which was quite nice. It was only when work started to get busier and more coming my way that on the advise of the accountant, I was told to go limited because there were various options of offsetting costs, taxes and various other things. Some of the things that you can do is bring in your missus to do admin and other secretarial work and offset your phone bills and various other bits."

Bettes explained that the challenges when setting up a business is that there is a lot of confusion. “In my simplest way, I find that you can register for self employment and who you are, which is very simple you can just go on the HMRC website and off you go. There is a more preferred option which is setting up a limited company and this is my choice whenever and speaking to clients or people because it is a little bit more secure and separates you as an individual to the business and if I know you plan to work on your own and grow then the limited company option is certainly the best.”
