The warning signs of asbestosis

Posted: Friday, May 31st, 2024

Clive Holland, host of The Clive Holland Show, turned attention to the fact that nearly half of all cases of asbestosis come from tradespeople and construction industry workers – meaning tradespeople are massively at risk for what is a horrible disease. So, Clive wanted to know how you make sure you stay safe when working on the tools – and fess up, do you wear your PPE?

He was joined by a former tradesperson who has suffered with this very issue, Duncan Roberts, as well as Dr Helen Wall for her expertise.

James said: “What I find when I was younger and during my apprenticeship, I did a lot of commercial buildings. What we found in a lot of the commercial buildings was that 4-inch pipes has been insulated with liquid asbestos. Fortunately, when I was getting into the industry in 2000, it was already known about the dangers of asbestos and the whole asbestosis affecting tradespeople. So, we were very aware of its dangers and every time we came across it we would ring the asbestos companies to come to the site and remove it.”

A caller from Carpentry Shop said: “I may have mentioned this before but my industrial workshop extractor removes 99.9% of dust and particulates from the atmosphere.
“However, because I train youngsters, they have to wear masks and ear defenders etc at all times to meet the HSE boards training protocol.”

Another Ross Fischer said: “My grandad worked in the mechanic business and he, like many others suffered asbestos poisoning from brake pad dust. Terrible thing to happen to anyone.”

And another Stephen Lovell added: “There isn’t any PPE good enough to block the smell of Danes butt scent workers from WJH Auto Bridgwater.”

And Biggy Jones pointed out that: “PPE is not one size fits all. I don’t wear it as much as I should because its uncomfortable. It needs a rethink and re-design to look modern.”

Another Speedy Sparx opined: “There are so many hidden dangers in older interiors these days. You have to be so careful.

Dave Smart noted: “I see so many trades not protecting themselves these days. I do worry when I see it and I will call it out. Trade life is short enough as it is.”

Dr Hellen said: So, asbestosis breaks down into dust particles and those particles when you look at it can cause lung disease. When they get inside your lungs they can cause scarring and this can cause trouble with breathing because the lungs are designed to inflate and deflate in order to get the air in and out.”
