Robin talks troubleshooting in the carpentry industry

Posted: Monday, July 17th, 2023

On this week's episode of The Carpentry Show, Robin Clevett discusses some of the common and not-so-common issues carpenters face on the job.

"Sometimes when we go to work it's almost impossible to keep bringing your tools off for the weekend. You need to look where you can park and if you can safely secure your tools there.

"Check if they have a garage or a secure garden building where you can store the tools," Robin explains. He adds that talking to the client before the job begins is important.

Robin also talks about building a set of tools. "A multi-tool is a good addition, it can do so many things. It's a tool once you start using you wonder how you managed without it earlier."

He says a multi-tool can cut sockets from a plasterboard wall or a kitchen unit. "If you're in the market to get a multi-tool, look at the vibration."

He also touches upon sanders, with carpenters having issues with discs tending to fly off, and about table saws blowing fuses.

"Circular saws a few years back had the issue of blowing fuses as they pulled a lot of power. Table saws are a classic example," he says. "Newer tech on the market has solved this issue, today."

Further in the show, Robin also discussed subcontracting and markups. "Let's consider this scenario, you're a chippie and a building firm's got you in and you've agreed to a day rate of £200.

"Then you learn from the customer that they've been charged £300 a day. I think this is a big issue and happens a lot."

He notes that builders should make it very clear to the chippies and the customers that monetary details shouldn't be discussed. "I don't think it should be asked by either parties."

Another topic, Robin covered was diet. "Do you take a packed lunch," he asks. "That is sensible and healthy." He suggests making a sandwich and packing/ buying a healthy fresh soup for lunch in winter and salads in summer.
