During the newest episode of The Painting & Decoration Show, painter and decorator Jon Graham, a guest on the show, shares that there are three essential qualities that make a good decorator. "Passion, eye for detail, and patience. "You have to be passionate about the work you do, if you don't have an interest in painting and decorating, it won't work. "With passion comes an eye for details, which means along with loving your job you will need to look for keen details in the work, followed by patience. There are no two ways around it, keep at it until you and your client are satisfied," he explains. He also points out that to be good at your job one needs to know how to deal with customers. "Always ask your clients questions, try to gauge what they're looking for," he adds. Graham, who also teaches the trade to new joiners in the industry, believes that it's important to have a strong grounding in the foundations of the trade. He says techniques such as hand sanding are vital to becoming a good decorator. His advice to decorators is to be open to learning new things. "Don't be so set in your ways that you can't imbibe new ways of doing the job." Young Scottish decorator Callum Bonner who recently graduated from school was also a guest on the show. Bonner runs Pristine Decor LTD and is looking to hire several apprentices, speaking on the show he said that he's looking for talents that are hands-on and have a drive to learn. He says skills can be taught, but ambition is inborn. Also, on the show was Peter Clark, a decorator and a friend of the show, who believes that being polite and professional differentiates a great decorator from a mediocre one. "Understanding and seeing your job through is also very essential. Talking to the customer, comprehending their needs, finding the right products, and doing the job to the best of your ability is what can set a good decorator apart," he says. He also adds that keeping up with the latest technology is also critical as, with changing times, requirements change. Listen to the whole show here.
