The Metropolitan Police, Havering Council, and several trade partners are hosting a free tool-marking event to help Havering tradespeople prevent tool theft. This event will take place on Thursday, July 17, from 7 a.m. to 9 a.m. at B&Q, Roneo Corner, Romford. It is intended to help discourage tool theft, a growing concern across the industry. In a Facebook statement, Havering Police said, “We are working with market leaders to mark tools, ensuring that recovered pieces of kit can be returned to their rightful owners.” Tradespeople who attend the event will receive a free tool marking kit, which is supplied by SelectaDNA and funded by Havering Council and Rhino Insurance. Shoaib Awan, aka The Gas Expert, posted on Instagram that each forensic marking kit costs around £60. He will also attend the event. “Come along and get your tools marked free of charge to help protect your gear and deter theft.” The kits allow tools to be permanently marked with a unique forensic signature, which is said to make stolen items traceable and harder for criminals to sell. Earlier this year, on 24 March 2025, a similar tool marking event was held at JJ Roofing Supplies in Cricklewood.
