One in three people in the UK lack a healthy work/life balance, and there are signs that within the trades the situation is even worse. Last year, Business Leader reported that construction workers have among the highest overtime hours in the country, commonly working at least five hours more than required on a work day. Guests on The Clive Holland Show this week urged listeners to improve their work/life balance. Messaging into the show, regular show contributor Tom from Gardenscape illustrated how hard it is to maintain that work/life balance when running a small trade business. "I work 8-4, but after that I do paperwork, quotes. It's a constant battle between my wife and I about spending time with the kids versus spending time on my computer.” To improve work/life balance, tradespeople have to make a concerted effort to break the habit of long hours. Guest on the show Dean Saxton highlighted the importance of family time. "I price jobs after 7pm. I help bathe and feed the kids before going to the job," Dean shared. Father of a two year old, George from GM Joinery added;, "work life balance is key simply because when your child becomes a teenager, you may have missed out on a lot." Commenting on Instagram Luke urged tradespeople to 'make time' away from work. "Explain to customers you have a life outside of work and [that] you got to be there for your family.” Work-life balance can seem like it is just about productivity but it's more about cherishing moments with loved ones while you can.
