Taking time off is crucial to the health and well-being of tradespeople, especially with a a very physical job such as plastering, but still most tradespeople fail to take any more than two weeks holiday a year. On this week, on the The Plastering Show Chris Frediani and Bradleigh Hancock are joined by Peter Townsend, also known as The PlasterMan to discuss taking time off and working the odd four-day-week. Townsend, a sole trader takes regular breaks around the UK in his caravan. His approach to work was inspired by a friend who worked himself into a breakdown. "I watched him spiral mentally and physically. We work so hard, and we forget to take time off. I consciously book time away in the summer. I even do weekends away," he says. A four-day week is possible, if you're able to get everything crammed in, Pete adds. Chris shares that in the lockdown he purchased a campervan, and on the weekends, he takes the family away. "You can become a victim of your own success. I've seen many tradesmen have all the work and are too busy, but mentally it overloads you," he adds. Darryl Grant, a spread from the Midlands, reveals that he works for himself along with his son and an apprentice. "When I started out, I would hardly take any time off, now I try to take the occasional holiday and spend time with family." He also shares that he does four days on the tool and one or half a day on the books for paperwork, including lead chasing, finances, sending quotes, making bookings, etc. He believes that following this pattern is a "must to ensure efficiency and growth".
