AUDIO NEWS: Construction sector to grow at 2.5% next year and tradespeople urged to go into teaching

Posted: Tuesday, October 29th, 2024

The construction industry is expected to register 2.5% growth next year, claims the Construction Products Association (CPA).

The CPA believes growth will return to the industry in 2025 driven by a renewed sense of optimism in the private housing market and hopes for increased infrastructure spending.

The Autumn Budget released today is expected to include updates on needed investment on health, education and infrastructure projects.

Nobel Francis, CPA economics director said, “optimism was creeping back into the industry… however, the government’s Autumn Budget will be key to ensuring that this remains the case”.

Tradespeople are nearly three times more likely to smoke than those in other occupations — that’s according to government data.

Statistics from the Office for Health Improvement & Disparities indicate that one in five employees involved in routine, manual and service occupations, in the UK smoke.

Those engaged in manual roles are 68% more likely to smoke, compared to the average smoking rate in England.

On a positive note, the percentage of manual workers who still smoke has dropped by 10% over the last decade.

Tradespeople are being encouraged to consider joining their local trade college and train the next generation of builders.

Peter Face, a painter and decorator who changed his career to become a FE teacher, told his local paper that this was a “perfect career pivot”, and encouraged other tradies to make the switch.
