AUDIO NEWS: Tradies get 3.5 million parking tickets and London named as the most expensive city to build

Posted: Wednesday, April 17th, 2024

Tradespeople picked up an astonishing 3.5 million parking fines in 2023!

The research from Direct Line estimates the fines cost tradies more than £177 million a year.

Parking fines can be anywhere between £50-to-70 each outside of London, and up to £160 in the capital, but are normally halved if paid within 14 days.

Alison Traboulsi, product manager at Direct Line said: “Parking is a regular battle for many tradespeople… These parking battles are costing tradespeople across the country millions of pounds.”

London has regained its title as the most expensive place to build.

The capital had briefly relinquished its top spot in Arcadis’ International Construction Costs report, to Geneva.

However, building costs in London have been pushed up by “enhanced specifications associated with health and safety and sustainability”.

In total eight of the top 25 cities on the list were in the UK or Ireland.

Bristol and Manchester, which ranked 10th and 12th respectively on the list, were the next most expensive cities to build in.

And finally, a builder who worked on a controversial £19 million sea wall project in West Kirby, near Merseyside has said he had to put up with seven months of daily abuse.

Eric Wade told the BBC that he had “never been spoken to so badly in my life” while working on the project.

Wade went on to describe the project as “quite an experience”.
