Posted: Wednesday, July 16th, 2025

The lack of skilled tradespeople in the UK is pushing homeowners to attempt DIY repairs – that’s according to research from Markel Direct.

In a survey of 1,000 homeowners, nearly half claimed they struggled to find tradespeople, while 52% said they had been turned away by tradies who were too busy to take on new work.

Nearly a third of homeowners admitted that the shortage of tradespeople had encouraged them to attempt DIY home repairs, which caused more damage.

The survey also found that homeowners were waiting up to 10 days in certain parts of the UK, for a tradesperson to fix urgent issues.
