AUDIO NEWS: Robert Jenrick hunts for stolen tools and small builders report 23% drop in enquiries

Posted: Thursday, March 6th, 2025

Robert Jenrick, the shadow secretary of state for Justice, has visited a car boot sale to see first-hand if he can find any stolen tools for sale.

The Tory MP was accompanied by Shoaib Awan, of Trades United, to secretly film allegedly suspect tools being sold.

Jenrick was offered one power tool that would typically retail for over £1,000 for just £160 quid.

On the segment for GB News, Awan estimated that each stall was selling around £50,000 worth of power tools.

At the start of February, Trades United organised a go-slow protest through London to raise awareness to the tool theft issue.

Business enquiries plummeted by nearly a quarter and workloads fell by 8% in the last quarter of 2024 – that’s according to research from the Federation of Master Builders (FMB).

The figures indicate that consumers are tightening their belts, warned FMB, chief executive, Brian Berry.

Over two thirds of FMB members also reported an increase in material costs.

And a further 42% claimed they’d experienced delays on jobs due to shortages of skilled tradespeople.
