AUDIO NEWS: Plumbing businesses report drop in profits and messy vans stress out tradespeople

Posted: Tuesday, July 15th, 2025

Plumbing and heating businesses are struggling as labour shortages deepen, costs rise, and profit margins fall — that’s according to a survey from the Plumbing and Heating Federation (SNIPEF).

The Q2 market survey found that just 17% of firms expected workloads to improve in the coming months and nearly 40% said that their order books have already fallen below expectations.

A drop in profits, rising costs and delayed payments were also widely reported.

Fiona Hodgson, chief executive with the trade body said: “These are not isolated pain points. They are symptoms of deeper, compounding pressures within our profession, [and] the wider construction sector.”

Tradespeople are wasting nearly an hour a week searching for items in their vans, claims research from Bunker.

Of those surveyed, more than half described their vans as messy, and a third wished they could get their vehicles more organised.

A concerning 77% of respondents admitted their messy van impacted their mental health.
