Posted: Thursday, July 10th, 2025

Over 80% of electricians are struggling with late customer payments — that’s according to a report from Installer Electric.

Other challenges reported by electrical contractors included customers not paying upfront, cash flow, and the rising cost of fuel, materials and insurance.

Over a fifth of survey respondents also said they were facing skills shortages.

Despite the issues, 48% of survey respondents said they expect turnover to improve in 2025.

A little under a third predicted turnover will drop this year.

Tradespeople are being urged to ‘think before they dig’ and check on the location of underground cables before they start excavation work.

Research from LUBUD, claims there are 1,000 people a month panic searching on Google after hitting an underground asset.

Gareth Pearson, from Northern Powergrid, a participant in National Safe Digging Week said: “underground cables can be buried outside homes and in driveways, which could put people at risk of life-threatening injuries if cables are hit while doing renovations.”

A 13-year-old has become the UK’s youngest qualified digger driver.

Finlay Gallagher started learning how to drive a JCB digger on his school holidays.

He passed his Construction Plant Competence Scheme with flying colours.

Pat Gallagher, Finlay’s grandfather, said he hoped his success would inspire other young people to give the construction industry a go.
