The National House Building Council is investing £100 million to launch 12 multi-skilled training hubs across the UK.

The hubs will produce an additional 3,000 skilled and site ready tradespeople each year.

The centres will initially focus their efforts on bricklaying, groundwork and site carpentry, but will stay flexible and adapt to local housing needs and changing regulations.

Roger Morton, director change and training hubs at NHBC promised the centres would “shake up housebuilding training”.

A London developer has committed to using at least 40% of reused materials on its jobs from April next year.

Great Portland Estates (GPS) has pledged to raise the target to 50% by April 2030, as it looks to reduce the embedded carbon of its construction and refurbishment work.

GPS has already pioneered the re-use of steel from one of its deconstructed buildings into its project at 30 Dules Street in St. Jame’s.

Brits will spend a staggering £2.8 billion more this year on home improvements ahead of the festive season – that’s according to a report by Jackson Woodturners.

In the poll of 1,000 UK adults, decorating the dining room and kitchen areas topped the list of most common home improvements, followed by the installation of new lighting.

The report claimed Gen Zs were the most likely to spend money sprucing up their home before Christmas.
