AUDIO NEWS: Heatwave sparks tool theft warning and electrician retires to Portugal on £1,000 a month

The recent heatwave has sparked warnings over a possible surge in tool and van theft.

Tradespeople are being urged to keep windows and skylights closed, when their work vehicle is parked up.

Mike Thompson, COO of Leasing Options said it was easy to become “complacent” and leave windows open for ventilation, while working long summer hours on-site.

Research from Direct Line Business Insurance suggests that 12,000 thefts from vehicles were reported last year, accounting for almost half of all reported tool theft cases.

The No Falls Foundation has renewed its call for the construction industry to take urgent action, after 35 people died in 2024/25 in falls from height.

While last year’s figure was down against both the 2023/24 total, and the five-year average, the numbers remain “unacceptably high”, said the charity.

According to the Health and Safety Executive’s report, released last week, falls from height continue to be the biggest cause of workplace fatalities in Great Britain.

Paul Ward, who used to earn around £40,000 a year, now lives abroad for £1,000 a month.

The grandfather-of-four, who sold his two-bedroom house near Leeds now lives comfortably in a rural property with 2.5 arches of land.
