According to a report on Harzards.org, experienced electrician Lee Fowler was fired after repeatedly raising concerns about site safety and helping four colleagues secure pay rises. A statement from the Unite executive council said it is disappointing “we continue to see workers who are prepared to raise genuine concerns about safety being targeted…. Blacklisting is one of the reasons that the construction sector has such a horrendous safety record.” --- Increasing numbers of tradespeople are upgrading their skills to install green tech – that’s the claim from new research from Direct Line Business Insurance. The survey of 150-electricians and heating engineers found that nearly three quarters were up-skilling to meet consumer demand for green technology in their homes. 38% of survey respondents said skyrocketing energy costs and the higher cost of living was behind the greater demand for green services --- Misconceptions about the construction industry are deterring people entering the trades. A report by the Chartered Institute of Building found that nearly 60% of people believed the average earning potential was low, and that many felt the work was overly physical, and even dangerous. Carline Gumble, chief executive of the trade body said: “Our survey shows there are big misconceptions around earning potential, job prospects and working conditions. This is something the sector needs to work together to address.” For the full construction news, please click below.
