AUDIO NEWS: Construction output falls in May and BSIF issues alarm about substandard PPE

Posted: Monday, July 14th, 2025

Monthly construction output dropped off in May as repair and maintenance work slowed down — that’s according to the latest government figures.

Overall output slipped by 0.6%, as non-housing repair work fell by 2.4% and housing R&M work also dropped by nearly 2%.

Despite May’s figures, the three month picture remains positive with construction output, new work and R&M jobs all rising.

Clive Docwra, managing director at construction consultancy McBains said growth remained sluggish. But there was hope “that recent announcements such as £39 billion to build more affordable homes will provide a confidence boost”.

The recall of safety shoes being sold on TikTok highlights the substandard PPE crisis, claims the British Safety Industry Federation (BSIF).

Trading standards issued a recall on the shoes following a complaint from Lewis Collantine, a product safety consultant.

BSIF CEO Alan Murray called for “real ramifications” for online suppliers who fail to provide properly certified products.

Checkatrade is on the hunt for the country’s best tradespeople. Entries for the second edition of its awards programme are due to close on the 25th of July.

The firm intends to hold five regional heats and then a grand final in November.

Emma Grant, head of commercial partnerships and trade experience said: “We’re excited to grow the awards into a truly national celebration.”
