A builder who helped to rescue a woman from a burning flat in Erith has denied he is a hero. Stephen Smith was having a conversation with a friend when he saw the women struggling to escape the flat. Smith and another unidentified man climbed a ladder and pulled the women free. Smith said: “Me and the other man worked as a team to save her… I guess you can say we were at the right place, and the right time.” --- The use of plastic ‘push fit’ pipework in renovation and new build houses is behind an increase in ‘escaped water’ insurance claims. Research from The Association of British Insurers indicates the total cost of ‘escaped water’ claims has nearly doubled in recent years. Ian Hollingworth, claims manager at EC Insurance said: “we have seen an upsurge in escape of water claims in recent years, and the increasing use of push-fit pipes has contributed to this rise.” --- Trade bodies and industry leaders converged on Westminster last week to argue for the perseveration of the current ‘work at height’ regulations. The Access Industry Forum has been campaigning to save regulations from being scrapped as part of the Retained EU Law bill, currently going through parliament. Chair of the forum, Peter Bennett warned that “the numbers of fatalities are still sadly too high despite working at height being regulated.”
