AUDIO NEWS: Apprenticeship numbers drop and tradespeople swap vans for e-cargo bikes

Posted: Wednesday, July 5th, 2023

There has been a “disastrous decline” in the number of construction apprenticeships in the last five years, claims the Labour Party.

Department of Education stats show the number of completed apprenticeships in England fell from over 12,000 in 2018 to 7,700 in 2022 – a drop of 40%.

Labour’s education chief Bridget Phillipson vowed to deliver the “next generation of brickies” if her party gets elected.

Phillipson added: “without good recruits we won’t see houses built or grow our economy.”

Plumbers and electricians joined a convoy of e-cargo bikes as they peddled across London last week.

The cargo bike cruise was organised to demonstrate the different businesses that have switched from diesel vans.

According to research from the Cargo Bike Charter, the last ten years has seen a 31% leap in the number of polluting vans on UK roads.

In comparison, the number of cars and taxis on our roads has fallen by 8% in the last decade.

And finally, Band of Builders has completed an extension to the home of a Woodbridge family, so they can bring their 21-year-old son home, more than three years after he suffered a brain aneurysm.

Former bricklayer, Luke Goold-Hannatt has needed round-the-clock care since the incident.

Over 70 tradespeople from across the UK helped build the extension, which includes a wet-room and a bedroom for a live-in carer, in just four weeks.
