Angela Rayner has been appointed as the secretary of state for levelling up, housing and community in the wake of Labour’s landslide victory in the general election. The MP for Aston-under-Lyne has held the housing brief in the shadow cabinet since 2023 and she was widely expected to take it into government. Labour put housebuilding at the centre of its manifesto pledging planning reforms, new towns, 1.5 million new homes in the next five years and changes to boost affordable housing. Rayner, who is also deputy PM is expected to be at the centre of delivering those policies. --- Construction activity dipped in June, as the house building sector slowed again, claims a survey of construction purchasing managers. According to S&P Global’s PM Index, the commercial sector continued to be the main driver of growth, while activity in the civil engineering sector also went up. Overall, survey respondents remained optimistic about the 12-month outlook for the industry. --- And finally, applications opened last week for Super Trowel 2025. Due to overwhelming demand the event organisers are planning to expand the competition to include five regional heats. Entrants will be competing for an expected prize pot of £50,000. This year’s finals, which will take place on 8th August at the Marshal Arena in Milton Keynes, will see 17 brickies compete for the title of the UK’s fastest bricklayer. --- To listen to the construction news please click below
