AUDIO NEWS: 70% of workers have witnessed a theft on site and batteries and GSHPs get VAT holiday

Posted: Sunday, February 11th, 2024

Seven out of 10 construction workers have witnessed theft onsite in the last year – that’s according to a report from BauWatch.

The 2024 Construction Crime Index also claims that the resale value of stolen tools, materials and fuel has reached record level

Despite the ‘theft epidemic’ sweeping the UK, security is seen as a low priority on many building sites.

The National Federation of Builders called on firms to take preventative action against thieves rather than adopt a ‘wait and see’ approach.

The rate of domestic battery, and ground source heat pump installations is expected to accelerate from this month, as a VAT holiday kicks in.

The VAT break, which is due to last until 2027, will reduce costs and improve energy independence for homeowners, claimed MP Nigel Huddleston.

MCS Foundation is also already lobbying to have the VAT holiday extended to 2030 to “really support renewable businesses.”

And finally, more than half the work carried out by tradespeople last year had an ‘energy saving’ focus, claims a poll from Screw Fix.

A shift to energy saving lighting and the implementation of smart thermostats were the most common ‘energy efficient’ jobs, followed by fitting loft insulation and new radiators.

Nearly three quarters of survey respondents also said that removing VAT on energy related products was key to improving energy efficiency in UK homes.
