Tradespeople in the East of England have topped a list of the best paid construction workers. The report by Clear Amber, estimated the average salary for a skilled tradesperson in the East of England was £660 a week. Tradies in the South East came second on the list, earning £650. Those plying their trade in London came third. Carpenters were the highest earning trade with an average salary of £832 a week. --- The skills shortage in the construction sector has left hundreds of thousands of homeowners waiting over a year for skilled tradespeople to start work. According to data compiled by Fix Radio, since 2021 415,000 people have spent 12 months waiting for work to begin. During the same period, nearly 300,000 people have been waiting over a year for a roofer, and 274,000 have spent a similar amount of time waiting for a carpenter to turn up. A recent report from CITB suggests the industry needs another 251,000 extra construction workers by 2028 to keep pace with the expected level of work. --- And finally, an entrepreneurial joiner has won the ‘Small Business of the Year’ award for his restoration business. Joseph Holman turned his passion for wood restoration into a thriving business after he rescued a door from a skip in 2014. His company, Green Doors, now employs 25 people. --- To listen to the construction news please click below
