Izzy The Bricky is joined by Ash Francis from the Bricklaying Social Club to talk about his life experiences and how the trade has changed his life for the better, while Charlie Collison discusses the upcoming Super Trowel event in Milton Keynes. Looking back, he recalls his early days in the trade. "I left school early - at the age of 15 as I come from a disadvantaged background and to get away from the house I applied for a college course in Doncaster - which was very far from where I lived. "I jumped on the brickwork course and got a flat and lived by myself from the age of 16. I worked extremely hard and did well. I was the first one in my batch to get an apprenticeship and never looked back since." Further, he talks about the trade, skills taught to newbies, tools, and construction technology. With 15 years of experience in the trade, Ash is the main figure behind the annual bricklaying competition Super Trowel, which he says is inspired by Spec Mix Bricklayer 500, a global championship for brickies organised in Las Vegas, US. Winner of Super Trowel 2023, Charlie Collison notes that the competition was "nerve-wracking". This year's event will have 12 contestants who will battle it out on 8 August 2024 to be crowned the 'fastest' bricklayer in the UK. Listen to the podcast here.
