Show hosts Andy Cam and Todd Glister chat about the challenges of growing a business. They're joined on the show by Robert Clarke AKA Pointy Plumber For Pointy Plumber, a sole trader for the past 10 years picking the right jobs is vital to success. "When you want to grow the business, you have to take on larger jobs, which then means the risk triples. I've always stayed clear of bathrooms and only focused on boiler changes, central heating, and basic maintenance - taps, pipework, and burst fixing. Pointy also adds that one needs to get over the psychological barrier to get to the next level in the business. The duo also read some of the texts they received on the subject. Mack says: "There's too much competition and too many quoting against each other. If you can't get work, you can't earn enough to invest or grow. There are sometimes eight-nine people quoting for the same job." Dan Tempest notes that finding good staff is a challenge. "Unfortunately, employees don't see the unquantified work of the employer they only see what the employer has." According to Todd, the biggest challenge is the "expectation" that the firm must grow "as fast as possible". His advice is to let the business grow "organically" and if you're not ready for it, don't go for it. "You don't need to feel the pressure of trying to grow it because society says that's the only way to be successful." Listen to the entire show here.
