There are certain aspects of the trade that not just newcomers and novices struggle with but old-timers as well. James Lawrence tells Andy Cam and Todd Glister that there are many areas in which plumbers and heating engineering need help. "Some of it comes from jobs that we as plumbers don't want to do. A lot of us are happier going out to fix 10 radiators instead of doing smaller jobs." A time time-saving hack, he shares is tidying up while working. "It's so basic but so vital in saving time." Another suggestion, he offered was putting aside tax money as soon as payments come in. "It's something we all know we must do but don't. "Every time you earn £100 put aside £35 to £40 away. It sounds boring and dull but at the end of the year, you'll have a nice little bonus and won't have to worry about the money for tax." Todd explains that he has a Monzo banking account in which percentages of income can be allotted into 'pots'. Grant Gundelfinger notes that taking pictures of work before and after is something that he always does. "Whether you need evidence for clients or ensuring that the work is well done, it's always good to have proof of what you've done." He also recommends always keeping a sharpie nearby. "Leave notes on the boilers on the work done. The next engineer that comes will thank you for leaving pertinent information such as when seals and electrodes were changed, vessels recharged, and which parts were replaced. It's always super handy." Andy and Todd's advice is to get a good accountant to help with the taxation and finance side of the business. Further on the show, they read out tips and tricks shared by other plumbing and heating engineers. Listen to the full show here.
