70% of tradespeople have been offered sex at work

Seven in 10 tradespeople in the UK have been propositioned at work with a third experiencing unwanted physical touching, according to a new report. More than a fifth say they’ve encountered instances of sexual offerings over the past 12 months alone. MaterialsMarket.com surveyed 2,500 British tradespeople to discover if they’ve ever experienced sexual offerings or unwanted attention in some way whilst at work. Two thirds (64%) revealed that it was by a customer, while 36% have been propositioned by passersby whilst at their workplace, WalesOnline reported. The marketplace also found that 5% of tradespeople who have been propositioned at work considered leaving the industry following their experience. One in ten of the professionals did admitted that they've catcelled someone historically, but the majority (88%) said that they no longer would, with some stating that they’ve done it in the past ‘due to a lack of education’ or because ‘it was a part of the trade culture’. Samuel Hunt, co-founder of MaterialsMarket.com, said: “Historically we hear of builders and tradespeople catcalling people on the job - and some people assume it’s still this way nowadays - however we never hear it the other way round. Within the industry we commonly hear about workers experiencing sexual propositions and sometimes industry workers are sexualised through the media, costumes and even the yearly sexy calendars, so we wanted to see what effect this has on tradespeople. “Speaking to our community it was shocking to see how many professionals have experienced sexual offerings whilst at work and alarming to find out just how many of them were from customers. We did want to look at both sides too and discover if tradespeople follow the catcalling stereotype in 2022. Although a few admitted to being guilty of this in the past, it’s good to see it’s increasingly viewed as being unacceptable as more people are being educated around the topic and realise the negative impact it can have on others.”
