A family from Middlesborough, whose house was recently severely destroyed by a fire, have been overcome with emotion following the generosity of local tradesmen who have offered free materials and labor to help them get their life back together. Philomena McMenamin, 84, who has lived at the address on Pannell Avenue for 40 years, and her son Brendon, 55, were dramatically rescued from their burning home in September. The blaze completely gutted the upstairs of the house and due to the pair not having building or home insurance, they were at a loss in how they would be able to rebuild and recover. Son Brendon had moved back into the family home 14 years ago in order to care for his mother who has dementia. The story quickly spread around the community and that’s when the generosity of some local tradesmen who heard about their plight got involved, offering everything from free materials to plumbing services and beyond. Youngest son, Michael O’Leary, who is one Philomena’s five children, had been doing his best to clean up the property but said he was blown away at the local support. Speaking to Gazettelive, he said "Everyone knows my mam. All the neighbours have been dead supportive as well as people that you don't even know!” "People have donated their time, they have donated their materials as well." "Everyone has been absolutely fantastic.” "They have been a power of strength. It's overwhelming really.” Singling out a few companies in particular, Michael said HSA Plumbing & Heating has provided a bathroom and Complete Bathroom Solutions are supplying the plumbing. JT Dove, Burton Roofing, James Burrell Builders, Firestone Roofing, G&O Gardening and Kis Scaffolding have all offered to help. Discount Tiles, Wickes and B&Q, in Stockton, and Boyes in Thornaby have also provided the family with materials. Both family members are expected to make a full recover, with Philomena already out of hospital but Brendon still in care. (H/T Gazettelive) Feature Image Credit: Gazettelive
