A Scaffolder in Wales is being hailed a hero by the local community after he witnessed a bus crash in Mumbles, Swansea, and immediately ran to the scene, saving a young boy who became trapped following the accident. Jonathan Powell, 36, acted on instinct after hearing children screaming and seeing carnage on the road following an incident that saw an open-top bus collide with a tree hanging over the road, resulting in the roof of the bus partially caving in on those on the top deck. The scaffolder, who was visiting Mumbles for the day with his family, wasted no time in running to the aid of a young boy who had become trapped, lifting and holding up a collapsed section of the roof that allowed the child to escape. Speaking to Wales Online, the tradesmen said, "I was just getting the bikes out of the car when I heard a massive crunch. I could hear screaming. I don't remember getting on the bus – I just remember going upstairs. I could see a kid trapped.” Hero scaffolder ran to save trapped young boy as bus crashed in Mumbles https://t.co/4VVkbMH4Hw pic.twitter.com/JkTkx8qwd4 "I managed to get him and his mother out of the bus. I think his mother was in a state of shock.” Fortunately no one suffered life-threatening injuries however a 12-year-old boy was airlifted to the University Hospital of Wales in Cardiff to be treated. Cheryl Hedges, a 56-year-old passenger who was on the top deck of the bus during the crash, recounted her memory in seeing the tradesman come to the aid of the boy, saying "A guy ran on the bus, a huge guy, a scaffolder. He ran on the bus and held the roof up so that the young lad was able to get out. Had the boy been six inches taller I think it would have been a different story. He got him out and got him to his mum,”, in comments made to Wales Online. An official statement following the incident was released by local police, saying "South Wales Police is continuing to investigate the circumstances behind a road traffic collision which happened at around 2.30pm on Tuesday August 10th on Mumbles Road, Swansea, involving a sightseeing bus.”.
