For all of the unusual things to come out of 2020, the most harmless but memorable trend had to be the meteoric rise and comeback of sea shanties. And just before you thought that the craze immortalised by UK #1 hitmaker Nathan Evans was over, it seems that sea shanties are officially here to stay after a group of lads singing shanties on a barge interrupted a live report on CNN international. Reporting during the G7 Summit in Cornwall, American journalist Hala Gorani was presenting a live piece on air when a floating stage of 11 men drifted behind her in the background and began belting out acapella sea shanties that could be heard on the broadcast. The group are known as The Oggymen and were singing some Cornish classics - apparently they exist. Fortunately the journalist found the funny side to it, sharing 2 videos to twitter with the caption “When you’re anchoring the Israeli Knesset confidence vote and a traditional a capella sea shanty singing barge floats past your location.” When you’re anchoring the Israeli Knesset confidence vote and a traditional a capella sea shanty singing barge floats past your location. pic.twitter.com/jmm3eAnEDt She also shared the broadcast version of the moment that was heard across CNN international, at 30 seconds in. As reported by Cornwall Live, The Oggymen’s stunt/concert was to raise awareness about child poverty in Cornwall. And how it played out on live TV… pic.twitter.com/ttScjkDkpQ One of the members of The Oggymen took to twitter to share their pure happiness of the moment, saying “I can't breathe (with laughter). “It honestly wasn't our intention to disrupt but it seems to have been taken in the right spirit. It's great because it might also spread the message about Cornish child poverty too so win, win." (H/T Cornwall Live)
