You know we’re living in a funny time when an parking spot can be listed online and sold for more than a third of the price of an average house in the UK - going under the hammer and selling for £115,000. A parking space. A place to park your car. A place for your automobile to be stored whilst you are off doing other things. The parking spot in Bath - which was described as ‘very rare’ and ‘a good size’ in the official sales guide sent out by the property agents flogging it - is located close to Circus Mews in the city centre, in a secure underground garage with an electric gate at the entrance. Talk about all the bells and whistles eh?! The space was listed and sold by property agents Whiteley Helyar. Image Credit: Whiteley Helyar The space was sold for the absurd amount of money within 2 days of being listed, a full 8 years since the last time a coveted spot in the same car park was available to be purchased. The official advert for the spot listing read: “The garage occupies a highly convenient and sought after position, just a very short walk from the vast selection of shops, galleries and restaurants both in the heart of the city and in the pedestrianised Margaret's Buildings.” According the the Office of National Statistics, the average price of a house in the UK is £266,000, so a parking spot selling at £115k represents a sales price just a fraction more than a third of that price…it’s almost half to be fair! But just before you think the UK has gone completely mad, rest assured that we don’t lead the world with the highest amount ever paid for a single parking spot, with a keen motoring enthusiast in Hong Kong spending £930,000 on one earlier this year.
