Izzy The Bricky, host of the Bricklaying Show, learns about Charlie Collison's career highlights, his social media presence with over 1.2 million subscribers on YouTube alone, opinions about the trade, and onsite experience. Charlie got into the trade at the age of 16 after finishing school. "I've always been a hands-on person. Bricklaying for me was a breath of fresh air. I've loved it from the day I picked the trowel up." Today, he runs his bricklaying firm, however over the past year he's downsized due to the lack of "quality" staff. "I've had people turn up but last less than a week, and those who say they are going to come in but don't even show up." Working on large sites can be quite a challenge, Charlie notes. "Dealing with newbie site managers is a real test, especially those who have no experience but are equipped with these qualifications and have no clue about what's going on. They are more of a hindrance than help." Elaborating on his social media presence, he says it's a double-edged sword. "Some people want you to succeed and love the content, while others criticise and want to bring you down. I avoid being on my phone all the time reading comments. It can drive you insane," Charlie points out. Listen to the podcast here.
