Would you consider a career outside of the trade?

Posted: Tuesday, January 23rd, 2024

A staggering new study that revealed a third of tradespeople are considering a career change after continued financial struggles in 2023. Clive Holland asks if this was you – and if you thought the money earned was representative of the work you do.

Carpenter David Bryne argues that while the industry is currently cash-strapped, leaving the trades is not an option for most tradespeople.

A text from the proprietor of GC Rock Plumbing reads: "It's not so much the job for me, it's all the running about - admin, quotes, taxation, dealing with customers, sorting the van out every night, and material runs every morning - which we have to do out of hours is what I despise. If I had the right opportunity, I'd jump ship and change careers."

Steve Gray Gas Services' text says: "At the minute, I'm loving my career and I've got loads of work. So, I'm sticking to the job."

James Howard notes that the cost-of-living pinch is moving up the food chain. "Work is certainly quieter but I would absolutely not change careers and be an employee again."

His suggestion to those struggling is: "Diversify training, learn different skills, and look for ways to monetise your skills and experience."

A message from Joshua White says that he worked with the ambulance service for eight years. "I got fed up after COVID-19 due to the stress and long hours. I left that to train to become a sparkie. I'm loving it and have never looked back since."

Damien Walter, CEO of BiKBBI, says it's a worrying statistic. "It's not been easy for tradespeople over the last couple of years. There are so many issues impacting tradespeople at the moment," he notes.
