A staggering new study that revealed a third of tradespeople are considering a career change after continued financial struggles in 2023. Clive Holland asks if this was you – and if you thought the money earned was representative of the work you do. Carpenter David Bryne argues that while the industry is currently cash-strapped, leaving the trades is not an option for most tradespeople. A text from the proprietor of GC Rock Plumbing reads: "It's not so much the job for me, it's all the running about - admin, quotes, taxation, dealing with customers, sorting the van out every night, and material runs every morning - which we have to do out of hours is what I despise. If I had the right opportunity, I'd jump ship and change careers." Steve Gray Gas Services' text says: "At the minute, I'm loving my career and I've got loads of work. So, I'm sticking to the job." James Howard notes that the cost-of-living pinch is moving up the food chain. "Work is certainly quieter but I would absolutely not change careers and be an employee again." His suggestion to those struggling is: "Diversify training, learn different skills, and look for ways to monetise your skills and experience." A message from Joshua White says that he worked with the ambulance service for eight years. "I got fed up after COVID-19 due to the stress and long hours. I left that to train to become a sparkie. I'm loving it and have never looked back since." Damien Walter, CEO of BiKBBI, says it's a worrying statistic. "It's not been easy for tradespeople over the last couple of years. There are so many issues impacting tradespeople at the moment," he notes. Listen to the podcast here.
