Hiring the first staff member is a big step for any small business. Chris Holland chats with two tradespeople who’ve expanded their business one step at a time. John Argyle, a carpenter from Enfield Refurbishments, realised that he needed help with his business after "running around like a headless chicken." He took on an apprentice at first rather than hiring an employee, believing it was the best decision ever. John has a word of advice for those looking to hire an employee or apprentice. "Meet them in their home environment and see how they interact with their family, as you will understand how they will behave with your customers and your business." Robert "Pointy" Clarke from PPH Pointy Plumbing & Heating also initially hired an apprentice to keep up with the workload. He points out that getting along with your employee/ apprentice is crucial. He also believes in transparency when it comes to remuneration. Pointy also shares tips on how to be a good employer/ boss.
