Tradespeople struggle to find parking for their vans!

Posted: Thursday, March 28th, 2024

If finding a parking spot wasn't challenging enough, now fitting a van into a parking bay is getting harder.

Research from Vanarama, estimates that 87% of vans don’t fit ‘traditional’ UK parking spaces, increasing the likelihood that tradespeople will pick up fines for parking incorrectly.

The van leasing firm also claims that 50% of vans won’t fit into multi-storey car parks.

On Monday's show Clive Holland reached out to the trade to ask how big a challenge parking their van had become.

Appearing on the show John Cruickshank a London-based plumber and heating engineer, said that parking his ULEZ-compliant van was even harder to fit into a standard parking bay, leading to the possibility of increased parking fines.

John said he had sent a letter to Sadiq Khan, mayor of London asking him to consider an annual trade parking permit that would make life easier for tradespeople.

Electrician Kimmy the Sparks also joined the show. Kimmy had recently swapped her van for an average sized car, but was still struggling to find parking spaces.

Noah messaged into the show to say he had picked up a “few good dents” on the bumper and rear doors of his van while trying to fit it into a parking bay.

Ross Fisher also texted the show to suggest the UK follow a similar plan to Germany where 10% of parking bays in public areas are for trade vehicles.
