Are high diesel prices hurting your business? Are you looking for a van with low running cost? Now might be the time to make the switch to electric. Sarah Tooze from HonestJohn.co.uk unveils her top five electric and hybrid vans, Electrical Times reports. LEVC VN5 It might have a name like a 1990s’ photocopier but the LEVC VN5 is one of the best hybrid vans on sale today. Based on the new London Taxi and built in Coventry, the VN5 combines a turbocharged 1.5-litre petrol engine with an electric motor and battery pack to return up to 313mpg. It’ll also travel up to 64 miles on pure electricity and carry a maximum payload of 830kg. Ford Transit Custom PHEV The Ford Transit Custom is Britain’s favourite van. The plug-in hybrid combines a 1.0-litre petrol engine with an electric motor and a battery located under the loadspace floor. It can cover up to 35 miles under electric power alone and return up to 91mpg. With the batteries positioned underneath the load floor, the Transit Custom PHEV is just as practical as a diesel version with six cubic metres of loadspace and a maximum payload of 1,130kg. Vauxhall Vivaro-E Easy to drive, practical and 100% electric, the Vauxhall Vivaro-E is a great van. The 50kWh version will cover up to 143 miles while the powerful 75kWh Vivaro-E has a maximum range of 205 miles. Depending on which model you choose, this adaptable Vauxhall will carry up to 1,226kg and tow up to 1,000kg. Add in its high level of standard equipment and it’s easy to see why the Vivaro-E is so popular, with all models getting cruise control and parking sensors as standard. Renault Kangoo Z.E Capable of travelling up to 186 miles on a single charge, the practical Renault Kangoo Z.E shows that you don’t have to downsize your expectations when it comes to choosing a non-diesel van with zero tailpipe emissions. The Kangoo Z.E is available in two load lengths and can be specified as a two-seater panel van or as a crew cab with five seats. Maximum payloads peak at 1,000kg. Mercedes-Benz eVito The eVito is the electric van that kicks off the new range of plug-in commercial vehicles from Mercedes-Benz. Capable of covering 163 miles on a single charge, this electric medium-size van can carry payloads weighing up to 807kg. The eVito is available in two load lengths – long and extra long – and cargo volumes range from 6.0 to 6.6 cubic metres.
