Diverted neutral currents provide a real threat of deadly gas explosions and fires with it set to increase by eightfold, Thomas Nagy and Paul Meenan look at how this can be prevented. Thomas starts off by explaining the definition of diverted neutrals which is a situation that occurs on a network when the combined protective earthing and neutral (PEN) conductor fails. Paul adds that this issue can be mitigated if cables are multiply earthed. "Electricians need to be aware of this problem and it needs to become part of our toolbox of safety checks." Getting the electricity networks renationalised is what Paul notes will solve the problem. "I would like a very sensible discussion to be had as UK Power Networks only monitor 12% of the LV network." Further, the pair talked about how electricians can detect this issue. "Go and buy yourself an earth leakage clamp meter. I recommend three of them so you can more greatly understand the issue," Paul suggests. Thomas adds that the age of the cabling is also part of the problem. Listen to the whole show here.
