Sparks need to pay more attention to health and safety, warns the founder of Hardhat Awareness Week. Speaking on The Electrical Show, Chris Tidy, who also founded STCC, a health and safety training and consultancy company, said one of the most common mistakes business owners in construction make when implementing health and safety procedures is failing to identify hazards. He said: “That's a big thing. Because if you don't identify hazards and something happens, then it could be quite serious. “A lot of people don’t write down ‘near misses’, or look at how to identify near misses before they happen. But that’s a great process to, to use – to see where, you know, things could have possibly gone severely wrong.” Another big one, he says, is neglecting maintenance, such as not looking after your tools. And he says it’s important for bosses to set a good example: “I get it, you know, a lot of us sometimes think health and safety has gone mad. But a lot of the time it's there to protect you and your co-workers as well. So don't be complacent with it.” He says if you’re just starting out on your health and safety journey, the Electrical Contractors Association (NIC EIC) is a good place to start. “They actually have electrical courses online, classroom-based or a blended mix, so they do all sorts. And they're obviously a reputable place to actually look so you don't get called out by going to someone that really doesn't do what they say on the tin.” To listen to the full show, click below.
