Wayne Lakin, Dan Brown, and David Bryne join Robin Clevett on The Carpentry Show to discuss accidents, injuries and how to avoid burnout. By the very nature of the job, carpenters lift a lot of weight, often incurring repeated strain on arm and leg joints. Functional movement coach Wayne Lakin suggests chippies undertake warm-up exercises to reduce the risk of injury. "Any strength-based gym routine would help. Upper body focus is crucial, go with chest press with dumbbells or barbells," Wayne notes. Carpenter Dan Brown argues that taking time off due to illness is hard as sole traders are hit with a double whammy of not getting paid and being sick. He confesses that the longest time he's taken off due to burnout was "two straight days". "I'd fallen just 20 feet away from broken tiles. I just got up and walked, trying to maintain my dignity." he laughs. Listen to the podcast here.
