On this week's episode of The Carpentry Show, Robin Clevett meets three talented chippies creating art from waste timber. Simon O'Rourke talks how art can be created from waste timber and standing stumps with the help of power and hand tools. Over the years, O'Rourke has sculptured wildlife, portraits of people, and artistic staircases. Some of his most memorable projects include a 50ft tool hand and a prop for Game of Thrones. When it comes to materials, O'Rourke gets his timber (waste products) from tree surgeons. "I'm often buying longer-lasting timber such as oak, cedar, and sweet chestnut." Tree surgeon turned chainsaw sculptor Michael Jones is passionate about animal carving. "I've done lions, dragons, life-size giraffes, fish, and dogs," he explains. Woodworker Ella Fielding is also a passionate chainsaw carver having done some work for the FA Cup. "I was approached to chainsaw curve the trophy while on camera. It was great fun." Fielding is also a TV personality and features in shows such as The Woodland Workshop and Kings of the Wood. Listen to the podcast here.
