Robin Clevett learns how specialising in kitchen design and builds has helped Jonathan Randall in his career as a carpenter. On this week's Carpenter Show Jon discusses the challenges he's faced and enjoyable aspects of his craft. Jon got into bespoke kitchens after seeing a gap in the market. To ensure consistency in quality, Jon and the team handle all the aspects in-house. "We do designs. We also have bench joiners, our own paint shop, delivery and installation. "We operate on word of mouth basis. While we have a website, it's mostly for potential clients to see pictures. We still do work for some of my early customers now. I have a lot of repeat work too." The key challenge, Jon faces is recruiting staff. "As a business, we have high standards and a strong work ethic. It's the case of keeping them feeling valued. While I do advertise for positions, I prefer asking the team for recommendations to fit the roles." His advice to those looking to get into kitchens. "Concentrate on either the making of the cabinet itself or the fitting. Do what you enjoy and then get the right people around you. As a young person, seek an apprenticeship with a kitchen company."
