Research by Magnet Trade, a kitchen renovation company, compared the average wage earned across different trades to the cost of living in each city and factors like quality of life, local tax laws, and rainfall, which can impact the number of days that tradespeople can work, MK Citizen reported. Milton Keynes ranked at the top of the study with an overall score of 96.3 points. The study also found that searches for tradesmen and related keywords rose by a sixth in the city last year. According to the report, the city’s monthly average wage of £1,756.17 – before rent – means tradespeople in the area are comparatively better off than the rest of the country, with an average wage of £30,806. It also found that with 90 days of yearly rainfall, tradespeople should not face too many weather disruptions, allowing for consistent income. Milton Keynes was also ranked second among all UK cities for quality of life, with a score of 205.04, only beaten by Aberdeen, which scored 216.24. Factors including cost of living, housing affordability, crime rates and commute times contributed to the high score. Norwich is in second place with an overall score of 96.1, followed by Ipswich in third, Northampton in fourth, and Reading in fifth. The study found that Croydon topped the list of the worst cities for tradespeople in the UK due to low disposable income. Another finding that ranks Milton Keynes highly in the standings is rent prices. The average one-bedroom property costs just £897, and a two-bedroom property costs £1,123, allowing for a greater level of disposable income month to month. These rent prices are 46% lower than in England’s capital, London. The UK Trades Skills Index 2023 report claimed that 937,000 more tradespeople would be needed by 2032, with a particular shortage of workers reported in trades such as electricians, plumbers, and bricklayers.
