MI5 drafting chippies and plasterers to help fight Britain’s terror threat

Posted: Friday, May 19th, 2023

Spy chiefs are recruiting a handyman to do odd jobs on James Bond-style missions, the Daily Star reported.

MI5 bosses are advertising for a £37,000-a-year “property specialist – carpenter multi-skilled tradesperson” to work for the intelligence service alongside agents like 007.

Potential applicants are told that the secret service’s team of chippies and plasterers will help battle Britain’s terror threat and “keep the country safe”.

There are no formal shift patterns, with out-of-hours and night work expected – but overtime is paid.

Recruits could have to work away from home for short periods and overseas deployment – though rare – could be required.

The advertisement says: “You will provide specialist building trade services for MI5. From carpentry and joinery to minor electrical works and plastering, you’ll undertake a range of building tasks and carry out work to a high standard, often at short notice and under tight deadlines.”

It adds: “This is a tradesperson role unlike any other. It’s dynamic – requiring you to react quickly to change as your team provides a 24/7 service to keep the country safe.”

While Daniel Craig’s famed six-pack might seem to be an impossible dream for most of us, a recent advert from MI5 said the next batch of spooks, who would be paid £37,757 a year, only need a “reasonable” level of fitness and must be comfortable “walking and sitting”.

The advert said: “Mobile Surveillance Officers follow subjects who have been identified by Intelligence Officers as potential threats to national security.

“You can be on the move all day, often following people under surveillance on foot, so you’ll need a reasonable level of health and fitness to allow you to do this.”

Successful candidates must also have good hearing and eyesight as well as competent driving skills.

The spies will receive 20 weeks of training and 25 days of holiday a year.
