Mark Millar finds out what insulated concrete formwork is

Posted: Monday, December 4th, 2023

ICF is a practical and energy-efficient construction system to accommodate our future needs, Mark Millar host of Building Idea comes to learn as he chats with Robin Miller.

Robin informs that ICF has been used in the construction industry for the past 50 years and explains that ICF is sort of like "Lego for adults". It constitutes large expanded hollow blocks of polystyrene which fit together to make a wall the centre is then filled with concrete.

The key advantages of using ICF in a build, according to Robin are that it is quick, practical, has fewer components required and offers a much stronger structure. Additionally, it offers a "very energy-efficient core".

"In the end, you have a better project with much better insulation than the other forms of buildings," he claims. He also adds that ICF is suitable for all weather conditions as it uses materials which are "robust in themselves".

Concerning costs, Robin notes that ICF is becoming increasingly cost-competitive as building regulations improve and higher standards of performance are required.

The time frame of an ICF build is equivalent to a timber frame construction, he notes and can be used across multiple types of buildings including flats.
