Is painting and decorating boring? Joel and Todd want to find out

Posted: Tuesday, August 1st, 2023

So why does everyone believe that painting and decorating is boring? On this week's Painting & Decorating Show, Joel Bardall and Todd Von Joel to their best to dispel the myth.

The pair respond to texts from other tradespeople and 'civilians' about whether decorating is dull.

Unfortunately, many feel the trade is boring. "Yes. Amongst all other trades, decorating is the most boring," reads one text. Similarly, another says: "All the times I've tried at home it's so boring."

A texter whose dad was a decorator, shares that he was dragged to jobs throughout his childhood. "I'm pretty good at it, but it's also the most boring thing I've ever done in my life."

While some disagree: "Being a good decorator is a skill," claims one listener. Another suggests that the trade is an "art form".

"I have done quite a bit over the years. I don't think it's boring at all. I find it therapeutic to do," reads a text. "I don't consider it boring because it requires so much concentration," suggests another.

They also asked other trades the same question. The first one reads: "Yes, I'd rather drink bleach." Others say they'd rather work in an office than be a decorator.

Alternately, a few were positive. "No, the satisfaction from a quality finish must be second to none." One listener points out that decorators can make artwork look "amazing".

Listeners were also asked if they would choose to join the trade. "No, cutting in takes a lot of time and patience that I don't have," says one texter.

Another says, "Yes, I wouldn't mind taking it up as a profession. I love seeing the end results, it's satisfying."
