John Roberts catches up with fellow landscapers Dan Kewley, Ash Thompson, and Kevin Fitzpatrick who talk about keeping the team motivated, working through the rain, and what they do away from the tools (as well as on the tools) during the coldest months of the year. Dan takes a hybrid approach to work in winter. "When we set up the business, we had a two-pronged approach to garden maintenance and landscaping. We've thrived by doing a lot more of the maintenance tasks during the colder months to keep the revenue flowing," he discloses. During autumn and winter, Dan takes up fencing and leaf-clearance jobs, with the latter being very profitable. For Ash getting work done through the winter is "very difficult". He adds: "We do move on to a lot of maintenance work for our vehicles and tools. The painful thing is the short days - we lose much daylight just travelling." To tackle the lack of work during the shorter days of the year, Ash reveals he's considering taking up work internationally. "I'm hoping in the New Year I can visit Dubai and Spain where work continues all year." Kevin says the rain and cold affect one's mental health. "As the nights draw in and there's less daylight and the weather's not great, it just brings you down. This is why I made a decision to shut down during the winter months."
