Kevin Tingly, aka TikTok’s The Paint Warrior, was back on The Painting and Decorating Show for a second time to share his experience of helping young offenders in prison get their NVQs.
Kevin was keen to get involved with the young prisoners at HMP Leigh Hill as he knows first-hand how a trade like decorating can help to turn lives around, having himself been on “a path of destruction” in his youth, before finding work as a decorator.
Kevin explained: “With my upbringing, I feel like everybody deserves a second chance. Where I've come from, I've been given a second chance, so why shouldn't anyone else have that opportunity?”
His prison work is even more admirable as Kevin suffered a violent attack three years ago which left him with ongoing injuries, after being mistaken for someone who was part of a dispute with a gang and being stabbed nine times.
Kevin was invited to HMP Leigh Hill after meeting a teacher from the prison at a P&D show. Shea asked him to come and have a chat with the young offenders and show them a few tricks of the trade.
Kevin said of the day in HMP Leigh Hill: “It was quite interesting. I met several prisoners, I showed them how I do my cutting in and stuff like that.
“But the main point of my visit was really for them to ask questions and get more of an idea of how decorating could benefit them.
“And after I spoke to them for a while, you know, they seemed like they were really pumped and excited afterwards. They all wrote me a nice letter after as well.”
Kevin saw how the courses could help young offenders find a better path after they were released, but also pointed out that the prison could do with more funding to give the youngsters a better set-up to practice their skills in.
For Kevin, it was a meaningful experience to go full circle and help young offenders in the prison, and an impressive one given the attack he experienced.
He said: “I come out and I was buzzing, it was a proud moment for me. I was a little bit emotional.”
