The Guild of Architectural Ironmongers (GAI) has further extended its representation on key fire safety and construction standards bodies. GAI has started work as a member of the drafting panel for a new British Standard, BS 8623 – Assessing the Performance of Passive Fire Protection Products. This influential document will be based on the Passive Fire Protection Forum’s guidance on undertaking technical assessments and is scheduled for publication in 2027. According to GAI, the standard will provide a structured methodology for evaluating construction products, including ironmongery and fire doors where applicable. The Guild is also working closely with the UK Government on the future of fire safety assessments, particularly in preparation for the removal of BS 476-22 from Approved Document B in England in 2029. The new standard will play a key role in ensuring that technical assessments remain part of accepted industry practice. Douglas Masterson, technical and training director, GAI , commented: "BS 8623 will have a lasting impact on fire safety standards in the UK. GAI’s involvement ensures that the perspective of the ironmongery sector is properly represented in the development of this critical methodology."
