Everton stadium contractor denies union's claims over unqualified workers

Posted: Thursday, February 22nd, 2024

Laing O'Rourke, the principal contractor delivering The Blues' new waterfront stadium, has shot down suggestions from Unite the Union that unqualified workers are carrying out crucial electrical works at the site, Liverpool Echo reported.

Unite said they believe workers without the correct credentials are working unsupervised on the project, arguing that this could result in "catastrophic damage", but Laing O'Rourke has denied this.

The issues raised by the union is focussed on the role of sub-contracted electricians and electrician's mates - an industry term given to someone working in the electrical industry who may have fundamental knowledge, but who is not fully qualified as an electrician.

Unite estimates there may be around 50 people in this position working at Bramley Moore Dock. The union provided copies of contracts for such workers which appear to state they are "not expecting to be supervised" while carrying out this work.

This was raised as a major concern by Unite's national officer for construction, Jason Poulter, who said: "We believe that workers without the required qualifications are working unsupervised on the site.

"This could result in substandard electrical installation, some issues may be picked up on inspection however latent defects in these systems can result in catastrophic damage to property, intermittent emergency alarm/safety systems and a danger to life."
